At the HFD's AI networking event on August 22, 2024, around 170 participants from universities across Germany, Austria and Switzerland exchanged views on generative AI in higher education. A look back and a look ahead.
The release of ChatGPT in November 2022 has led to the wider use of artificial intelligence (AI) reaching into the mainstream. AI tools have long since found their way into colleges and universities. But how do students and teachers actually view this change? What are the opportunities and challenges of using AI tools in university teaching? Lukas Erle, Thomas Hoss and Prof. Dr. Sabrina Eimler (Department of Human Factors & Gender Studies at the Institute of Computer Science at the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences in Bottrop) put these and other questions to students and teachers at various German colleges and universities.
German universities are facing the challenge of making tools based on generative artificial intelligence (AI) accessible for research, teaching and administration. The focus is currently on the accessibility of commercially available tools such as ChatGPT. However, the issue of non-commercial, open source-based solutions is also increasingly coming to the fore in the discussions. Mit der Verbreitung von ChatGPT fragt man in der Hochschuldidaktik vor allem danach, welche neuen Kompetenzen aufgebaut werden sollten oder müssten, um generative KI-Systeme souverän einsetzen zu können. Dass und inwiefern Kompetenzen auch verloren gehen könnten, ist ein Phänomen, das national wie international derzeit eine vergleichsweise geringe Rolle in Beiträgen zu KI an Hochschulen spielt. […]
